Farm systems
Agriculture is organised into production systems that combine crops, livestock, soils, water, and management in different ways. This overview introduces the main systems; detailed entries will expand over time.
What a “farm system” means
A farming system is the combination of enterprises, resources, and management practices a farm uses to produce food, fibre, or other outputs. Systems are shaped by climate, soils, markets, labour, policy, and the goals of the people running them, so no single system is universally “best” — each involves trade-offs.
Major production systems
The following are broad categories. In practice, most real farms combine elements of several.
- Conventional systems — the mainstream systems in most regions, using a mix of mechanisation, improved varieties, and purchased inputs, managed to local recommendations and regulations.
- Organic systems — production that follows defined organic standards, restricting synthetic inputs and emphasising soil biology, rotations, and biological management. Certification rules are set regionally.
- Regenerative approaches — a set of practices that aim to improve soil health, biodiversity, and water function, often through reduced tillage, cover cropping, and integrating livestock. Definitions vary and are evolving.
- Integrated crop–livestock systems — mixed farms where crops and animals interact, recycling nutrients through manure and using crop residues and forages as feed.
- Protected cultivation — growing under structures such as greenhouses and polytunnels to extend seasons and manage climate, common for high-value horticulture.
- Soilless systems — hydroponics and related methods that grow plants in nutrient solution or inert media, mainly in controlled environments.

Integrated Crop–Livestock Systems
Integrated crop–livestock systems deliberately combine crop and animal production on the same farm so that each component can supply resources — feed, forage, manure, and land use — the other can use.

Intercropping
Intercropping grows two or more crops together in the same field at the same time so they share the growing period, aiming to use light, water, and nutrients more fully and to gain benefits such as legume nitrogen fixation and pest suppression.

Mixed Farming
Mixed farming combines multiple enterprises — most commonly crop and livestock production, or several diversified crop types — on a single farm, spreading risk and, when managed together, allowing byproducts of one enterprise to support another.

Rice-fish farming integrates fish or other aquatic animals into flooded rice fields, either at the same time as the rice or in rotation, so that a single field produces both a grain crop and an aquatic protein source while the two components support each other.

Shifting Cultivation
Shifting cultivation is a traditional farming system, common in tropical regions, in which a patch of vegetation is cleared and often burned, cropped for a few seasons until soil fertility declines, then left to fallow and regenerate while cultivation moves to a new patch.

Silvopasture deliberately integrates trees, forage plants, and grazing livestock on the same land, managed together so trees provide shade, shelter, or additional products while forage continues to support grazing animals.
